Just Show Up

100 crunches
Airdyne 2 x 10 min w/5 min rest between -- 195 calories, 188 calories

I was pretty proud of this workout today.  I could have easily bagged it.  For the last few months I've had a habit of waking up at about midnight and not being able to sleep for 3 or 4 hours.  Then I fall asleep for like an hour at 4 am.  It makes it just too brutal to do anything at my normal 5 am time.  To make things worse, I usually get really bored in my nightowl time and I end up going downstairs and scarfing down a big bowl of sugary cereal (stupid I know, but the whole process is stupid if you asked me).

Anyway, I skipped breakfast to try and make up for the cereal, and other than some fries at lunch I stayed on top of my diet.  Then after a long day at work I had kid duty in the evening so my time was really limited.  But I was still able to put together a little interval workout while checking on the kids in the house.  Even better, my 10 minute airdyne times were better than my PR was just a couple of months ago.  I was happy I sucked it up and got something done.

For trail shoes I have been wearing Brooks Pure Grit for about a year.  I really like how they feel, but the traction sucks.  They supposedly tried to fix it on this year's shoe, but after looking at them in the store I wasn't convinced.  So I've been on the lookout to try something new.  I just ordered a pair of Salomon Sense Mantras.  They are a new design that looks like a good mix of lower heel drop  with more cushion.  I couldn't find a place in Reno that carried them, so I took a chance on sizing and ordered from Running Warehouse (highly recommended site, they are great about returns).  It looks like I got lucky because it seems like they fit pretty well.  I'll have to take them for a test run soon, but I'm hoping that they might work out.

  1. I just bought a pair of those last month. They are my new favorite shoe and I plan in doing all my ultras/trail races in them this year. I wanted a pair of S-Lab Sense but could not justify dropping $200 on a pair of shoes that I would be lucky to get 400 miles out of. After talking to the Rocky Mt Region Rep for Salomon Rep at a special Boulder Trail Runners try on of this shoe she told me that the Mantra is that same shoe buffed up a little for the everyday runner, and it is cheaper. Win/win in my book.

I also pick up a pair of PI Emotions N1 Trail last week but have not put enough miles in them yet to have an opinion on them.
